February 21 is a glorious historic day not only for our own
nation but also for all nations of the world. The 21
st February has
been declared as the International Mother Language Day after the Language
Movement on the 21
st February in 1952 in Bangladesh, erstwhile East
Pakistan. Now the day is observed as the International Mother Language Day in
every corner of the world with great respect and tribute to the sacrifice of
the sons of the soil in the Language Movement. On this day in 1952 the then
Pakistan government shot dead some students in Dhaka who were demonstrating
demanding Bangla as one of the state language in Pakistan. On this day, people
go to the Shaheed Minar immediately after midnight singing the chorus, “Amar Bhaiyer
Rokte Rangano Ekushe February Ami ki Bhulite Pari ?” to pay tribute and homage
to martyrs of our Language Movement. They wear a black badge as the token of
mourning and remembrance for the great sacrifice of the martyrs. In order to
honour the martyrs, people walk to the Shaheed Minar with great solemnity. Even
they do not put on any shoes in order to keep the spirit and dignity of their
sacrifice. At the Shaheed Minar people show their respect for the language
martyrs by offering different types of flower wreaths. Thus they remember the
greatest sacrifice of the martyrs. After that they raise their hands and pray
to God for the peace and salvation of their departed souls in the hereafter.
